A historical city with plenty of attractions to explore

The second largest city in New Brunswick, the coastal metropolis of Saint John is full of history, and therefore full of exciting and fascinating opportunities. Known as the Loyalist City, Saint John was created by British subjects that had fled the United States in order to remain loyal to Britain in 1783, and now in the present day the city is home to museums, shops, restaurants, and beautiful architecture.

Things to do in Saint John

The New Brunswick Museum hosts a plethora of local artwork dating way back to the 1800's, and is a truly interesting way to while away an afternoon. Meanwhile, the Saint John City Market is a vibrant oasis full of delicious delicacies, offering a variety of cuisines Monday to Saturday all year round.

One of our favourite ways to spend a morning is walking along to the Market Square to watch cruise ships dock at the harbour, dipping in to the city’s sumptuous restaurants, brilliant galleries and diverse shops along the way. There’s plenty for families too, including the Cherry Brook Zoo, and spectacular productions at the Imperial Theatre.

Though the architecture is phenomenal, Saint John’s natural beauty is what makes Saint John so joyful. Get some fresh air and stroll along Irving Nature Park’s seven miles of trails, or discover the Reversing Rapids and marvel at the rapids running backwards at high tide.

When to visit Saint John

The best months to visit Saint John is April to May and September to October, offering a mild temperature perfect for exploring, a big bloom of colourful flora and changing leaves, and better hotel rates. The summer is of course an excellent time to explore the coastal city, but the crowds can get very busy.
