Overview

Tundra Buggy Lodge at Polar Bear Point is a mobile lodge in the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, home to the largest concentration of polar bears in Churchill. Enjoy the polar bears, day or night, as their lives unfold before your eyes. On clear nights you may be treated to the magical dance of the Northern Lights. Evenings at the lodge can be as memorable as the days, with a chance to to get to know other guests and and swap tales. Enjoy presentations from Polar Bears International Species Experts, world-renowned polar bear researchers and scientists. Daily Tundra Buggy excursions allow you to explore the area beyond the lodge. Guests at the lodge will stay in one of two bunkhouses containing shared bathrooms and showers, have opportunities to mingle with fellow guests in the lounge unit and enjoy delicious meals in the dining unit. The maximum number of guests on each tour is 20 people, so whilst you will have chance to make new friends, there will also be plenty of space for you to view the bears and  enjoy the experience.

The best way to experience an intimate encounter with a wild polar bear is on an authentic Tundra Buggy. All of the Tundra Buggies are furnished with dual-pane frost-free windows and contain propane heating systems that closely resemble a cosy fireplace, with real flame (behind glass). Each day, depart early and board the world famous Tundra Buggies looking for polar bears and other wildlife out on the tundra. You will enjoy picnic style lunches and refreshments while you are bear watching. (JV)

"After a night in Winnipeg and armed with our warm weather gear we took a small aircraft way up north to the Polar Bear capital of Churchill on the Hudson Bay. It felt like we were in the middle of nowhere…and I guess that’s about right! We had a tour of the museum which had some quirky exhibits including some of the oldest Inuit carvings in the world and took a trip to the Polar Bear Jail to learn about how the locals live safely alongside these beautiful bears. We had a full day out on a Tundra Buggy – a specially made truck that is high enough so that you’re safe from the Polar Bears whilst giving you great views and the opportunity to get close enough to the bears for some fantastic photo opportunities. We were lucky enough to spot an artic fox as well as plenty of birds.

Staying overnight in the Tundra Lodge was something I’ll never forget. It’s not exactly the Ritz but is perfectly comfortable for one night and you can visit the little pub and bakery and meet the friendly locals. You really can’t beat the feeling of being out there on the tundra amongst all the polar bears – it really is an amazing experience. We got to see a massive bear when we were just about to eat dinner – wow!"

The following itinerary is for the 5 night package, the itinerary for the 6 night package follows

Day 1

Fly to Winnipeg and take the shuttle bus to your hotel for the night. In the evening you will meet your tour guide and group for a brief orientation.

Overnight at Lakeview Signature Airport Hotel or similar.

Day 2

Take an early morning flight to the remote town of Churchill Manitoba. When you arrive into Churchill you will enjoy a town and area orientation tour. You then have free time to explore the town in more depth - visits to the Parks Canada Visit Centre and Itsanitaq Museums are highly recommended and admission is included.

Overnight in Churchill at Tundra Inn or similar (Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Day 3

Enjoy a dog-sledding / carting excursion and interpretive programme. Hosted by a local resident and dog sledding expert, you will learn about the history associated with dog sledding in Northern Canada. Enjoy an exhilarating ride behind a strong team of huskies on a custom-made sled (or cart, weather permitting). Join the musher’s for hot chocolate and freshly made bannock after your ride and share their personal stories of their dog sledding adventures.Then Transfer to the Buggy launch site and begin your exciting trip to the Tundra Buggy Lodge, where you will view, photograph, and learn about Polar Bears, other arctic wildlife and the environment.

Overnight Tundra Buggy Lodge (Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Day 4

After breakfast, you will head out on the Tundra Buggy, away from the Lodge, searching for Polar Bears and other wildlife. The evening will be spent enjoying delicious home cooked meals, watching video & slide presentations and socializing. Watch the night sky for Northern Lights (weather permitting).

Overnight Tundra Buggy Lodge (Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Day 5

After breakfast, the group will depart the lodge, participating on the last Tundra Buggy expedition, meandering slowly along the way. Upon arrival back at the launch site, you will be transferred directly to the airport. Take an evening flight back to Winnipeg with onboard dinner.

Depart Winnipeg at leisure for your flight home

Day 6

  • Slide Presentation: Conducted by seasoned residents. Relax and soak-up years of northern experience communicated in enchanting stories and magnificent photography.

What To Pack:

Bring an insulated parka (with hood), warm sweaters, nylon outer pants (ski warm-up pants), insulated boots, insulated hats, insulated mitts, scarf, quality socks, light cotton / silk gloves (to protect handswhile handling optics), pants, long shirts, long underwear, turtleneck pullovers, wool slacks. Please be prepared for extremely windy conditions by dressing in layers.

Winter gear rentals (Canada Goose parkas, snow pants and Baffin boots) are available for pre-booking, and may be picked up on the evening prior to the northbound flight to Churchill. This is on request, please contact us for additional details and pricing.

To protect the lenses on your photographic equipment from “frosting” keep your camera cold, and cover it with a plastic bag before bringing it into a warmer environment. Once the equipment has warmed to room temperature, it is safe to remove the plastic bag. Should frosting occur on your lenses, you must warm the equipment up thoroughly before you try
to take it out in the cold again.
